There are currently 48 million Americans that have a significant hearing loss. From that statistic, every two out of three people over the age of 75 suffer some form of hearing impairment. Luckily hearing aids can offer dramatic improvements in the quality of life for most people with hearing loss. Ninety-nine-year-old Marco Island resident, Harry Friedman, received free hearing aids for life, courtesy of Life Hearing Center. Friedman turns 100 years old in August.

Family owned Life Hearing Center (LHC) has been in business for over 65 years. There that day were Donald Kleindl II, his son Donald Kleindl III, his daughter Shauna M. Kleindl, Jessica Ford and Richard F. Radostits. Kleindl II, Kleindl III and Radostits are board certified audioprosthologists. Shauna M. Kleindl is a hearing specialist, and Jessica Ford the director of operations.

Friedman is the second Marco resident that has received a free pair of hearing aids for life. Prior to the event, Friedman came into the facility for his audiogram, which consisted of a few tests to measure how well he could hear. Then two weeks

before the giveaway, Friedman came in to create his inner ear molding for a custom fit. He currently has an 80-decibel hearing loss, which makes it difficult to carry on during his daily activities. As an active soon-to-be centenarian, the day finally came for Friedman to hear clearly again.

Wearing a pair of well-fitted hearing aids is like wearing a pair of comfortable tennis shoes. You don’t notice they’re on and you are in no hurry to take them off at the end of the day. LHS is getting the word out to the local community that they will provide free hearing aids this year to anyone who is 100 or older.

Hearing aids can easily range from $1,500 to $3,500 per unit, doubling the price if two are needed or if the severity of the patient’s hearing loss is significant. The set of hearing aids LHC gave Friedman are valued at $4,200. They set are custom made in the U.S. and are simple to operate. The process is streamlined for the patient at LHC to make the experience as easy as

possible – no funds required. “Well…that’s not bad,” Friedman stated when Kliendl told him he was receiving the set of hearing aids free for life.

Kliendl asked Friedman what the secret to his longevity is, mentioning that the first 100-year-old they gave hearing aids to surprisingly said she eats meat and potatoes every day. “I exercised daily and I still do.” Friedman said. “I still go down to the gym.” He can also be found at happy hour at 4 PM enjoying the beautiful island scene with the locals.

LHC is working hard to get the local community aware of the program. There are many people who can greatly benefit from having access to free hearing for life. “We’re hoping to help 40 or 50 more people by December.” Kliendl stated.
