Mark your calendars! On Saturday, March 5, the Marco Island Fire Foundation and the Marco Island Police Foundation will hold a free admission community “Fun Day” featuring a softball game between Marco Island’s first responders – the police (“Finest”) and Firefighters/EMS (“Bravest”). Festivities will begin at the ballpark on Winterberry Drive at 10:00a.m. with games for kids, followed by a home run hitting contest between selected ballplayers from the teams. The softball game will start at noon. A mystery celebrity will throw out the first ball, and there will be more surprises.
In addition to free admission hot dogs, hamburgers, bratwurst, soft drinks and beer will be available at bargain prices (sorry kids, the beer is for adults only!).
The winner of the ballgame will receive the inaugural traveling trophy and gloating rights until next year. Those of you who grew up in New York City may remember how Yankee Stadium was jammed year after year for the terrific police-fire baseball game. Marco Island will replicate that fierce, but friendly rivalry, even though we expect a few less than 60,000 attendees!
Marco Island’s Fire and Police Foundations were created by resident volunteers to insure that our protectors who serve us so well and even put their lives at risk are looked after in case of emergency or other unforeseen events.
Remember the date. March 5, 2011, 10:00 a.m. at Winterberry Park, for a wonderful outing!
