Thanksgiving Spirit Comes Early to the Y: Kid-Cooked Soup and Salads Ensure Satisfaction

Rows of soup pots await being slurped down for the Y’s Pre-Thanksgiving celebration.

Thanksgiving is upon us this week, but the spirit of this much-revered American holiday is always celebrated a week early at the Marco YMCA of South Collier.

It comes in the form of Thanksgiving-themed entertainment by Y pre-school and afterschool students, and is capped afterward by everyone settling down to a scrumptious meal of soup and salads.

The students themselves do some of the prepping.

The meal, as Y officials have noted in previous years, may be more substantial than traditional meals some families in the area can actually afford for the real day. But everybody who attends enjoys the home-cooked food, the cheerful atmosphere and the youngsters’ entertainment.

Brady Tubb’s son Mason is a student at the Y’s early learning center, and his Dad is more than impressed.

“He learns a lot every day, which is really appreciated,” Brady said. “Miss Kelly, her teacher, is an angel and a godsend. We benefit from him being able to do this. The Y, and this one in particular, is fantastic.”

The evening also showcased the Y’s ongoing book fair, with lines and lines of books catching the attention of many of the younger ones.

Pictured is some of the action during the evening.
