Tech Trek is seeking nominations of seventh grade girls for their weeklong STEM educational camp. Students are nominated for the program by their math and science teachers. The deadline for teachers’ nominations is December 15.
Women are underrepresented in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Tech Trek’s camp aims at changing that by introducing girls to STEM through fun and interesting educational workshops. Some of the workshops offered at the 2015 Tech Trek camp included application inventor software, aeronautics design for hot air balloons and Barbie bungee-jumping.
The American Association of University Women (AAUW) sponsors Tech Trek. Sue Sloan, 2016 Tech Trek director said, “AAUW has been a leader in the effort to get more girls interested in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), beginning over 17 years ago in California. AAUW Tech Trek has expanded to 10 camps throughout the United States. We are proud to offer this opportunity to our young Florida girls entering 8th grade.”
Last year teachers throughout Florida nominated over 180 girls for the program. Forty-two of those students were accepted, and were awarded scholarships. The camp expenses are close to $1,000 per student, and costs were covered by scholarships.
Tech Trek has been successful in its efforts to interest girls in STEM fields. Sue Sloan says, “Statistics from Tech Trek alumnae demonstrate the impact of our camp experience by their higher enrollment in high school science and math courses (including Advanced Placement courses) and college attendance at a higher rate than the national average. Tech Trek opens up a world of possibilities in which girls see first-hand from exceptional female role models in STEM careers how exciting STEM careers can be.”
Girls from every corner of Florida participated in the camp program. Sarah Metscher, a 2014 camper from Palm Coast, Florida, described her experience. Sarah said, “This week also gave me a better understanding of what I can do and what I want to be when I grow up and that nothing is impossible and I can do anything boys can do and maybe do it better than them.”
