Annually, the United States Power Squadron (known now as America’s Boating Club) sponsors a national student poster contest. The theme of the contest this year was about promoting safe boating. Two classes at Tommie Barfield Elementary (TBE) participated in the local contest by America’s Boating Club – Marco Island. From the numerous entries, three posters were selected locally to compete at the district level in the 9-11 age category.
Drum roll… Not one, but three local TBE students received top honors at the District competition on April 13th. District 22 (D22) is made up of 16 squadrons from across Southwest Florida. The first place winning poster at the district level will go on to compete in the national competition in September.
The first, second and third place winners locally, and at the district level, received recognition and cash prizes from the local and district competitions. Prizes were awarded during the Tommie Barfield Morning News LIVE.
Local Squadron Commander, Thomas Morr, and District 22 Commander, Ted Reiss, presented the prize money to the winning students and thanked the teachers and all the students who entered the poster contest. “We hope that there is more awareness of boating safety as a result.” The Commanders announced that participating classes will have a popsicle snack provided by their squadron.
