Take a Couple of Trips with Us

The Marco island Historical Society is pleased to announce that a reception for a new exhibit will be held at our museum from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. on Tuesday, July 3, taking the place of our regular monthly meeting. The wine and cheese party will introduce our latest show: Quilts of the Tamiami Trail.

This remarkable collection highlights the opening of the historic highway from Tampa to Miami in 1928, and includes scenes ranging from Domino Park in Miami’s Little Havana to the smallest post office in the country at Ochopee. It will focus on much of Florida’s remaining wilderness in the Everglades and local wildlife such as alligators, birds and other animals.

These wonderful quilts will be on display in our museum for only one month, and were conceived and fabricated by the Miami Art Quilters. Take this refreshing trip which will cost no gasoline and enjoy the journey along the highway with us.

But There Is More!!

On Friday, July 13 we are going to take a field trip to the Coral Castle in Homestead, Florida. This unusual structure will amaze and delight you, especially when you consider that it was done almost entirely by one person as a monument to his lady love. Since it opened in 1923, scientists and architects have marveled at the structure and dubbed it the American’s Stonehenge.

Luncheon will be at individual expense at the well-known Shivers Restaurant. Admission cost per person at the castle is only $12 and you can mail your check for this amount to:

B.J. Henning
950 Sundrop Court
Marco Island FL 34145

We will carpool from the back parking lot at the museum at 8:00 A.M. on the day of the trip. Deadline for reservations is July 7. Don’t miss an opportunity to visit this unique Florida attraction.
