Sunrise Rotary Donates Dictionaries

As it has done for over a decade, the Rotary Club of Marco Island Sunrise donated and delivered dictionaries to all third graders at Manatee Elementary School and Estates Elementary School. The dictionaries were distributed to each class, reaching more than 140 students.

Rotarians Wanda Burson and Skip Merriam made the deliveries to Estates Elementary in Everglades City. The students were excited to receive the gifts, especially after the damage done by Hurricane Irma to their community. In Wanda Burson’s words, “Wow, what great kids!”

Rotarians Hyla Crane, Kevin Sullivan and Sullivan’s daughter, Rose (a student at Lely High School) delivered the dictionaries to Manatee Elementary. They were assisted by Susan Pratt, media specialist, who coordinated the dictionary distribution. Hyla Crane summed up the experience, “I took pictures of the kids and their dictionaries. Although pictures supposedly speak a thousand words, pictures of these kids with their dictionaries left me speechless.”

The dictionary program is part of a worldwide Rotary literacy effort. Each year, Sunrise Rotary buys and delivers dictionaries to local elementary schools on Rotary’s Dictionary Day. It is one of the club’s most enjoyable service projects.

Rotary is an organization of business and professional persons united worldwide who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards on all vocations and help build goodwill and peace in the world. The Rotary Club of Marco Island Sunrise follows a hectic pace of local services including the Seafood Festival, Meals of Hope, bell ringing for the Salvation Army and fundraising efforts for local schools.

The Rotary Club of Marco Island Sunrise meets at Stonewall’s American Bistro on Tuesday mornings at 7 AM.
