As it has done for over a decade, the Rotary Club of Marco Island Sunrise donated and delivered dictionaries to all third graders at Manatee Elementary, Estates Elementary and Everglades Elementary School. The dictionaries were distributed to each class, reaching more than 140 students.
Rotarians Wanda Burson, Rich Kaplan and Skip Merriam made the deliveries to Estates Elementary in Golden Gate Estates. The students were excited to receive the gifts, and one class even sang a song for the Rotarians. The group distributed 100 dictionaries to five classes. In Wanda Burson’s words, “Wow, what great kids!”
Rotarian Lisa Honig delivered the dictionaries to Manatee Elementary. The Manatee students were also extremely excited to receive the educational assistance. Lisa Honig remarked, “The kids started reading through the dictionaries almost as we handed them out. They will definitely be put to good use.”
Rotarian Craig Woodward delivered dictionaries to Everglades City. He said, “The children in Everglades use crayons to mark words as they learn them because highlighter bleeds through and each year they use a different color. Some of the older kids showed me their dictionaries and all the words they have learned.”
The dictionary program is part of a worldwide Rotary literacy effort. Each year, Sunrise Rotary buys and delivers dictionaries to local elementary schools on Rotary’s Dictionary Day. It is one of the club’s most enjoyable service projects.
