On Saturday, March 1, Friends of Tigertail hosted its annual “Discover Tigertail Beach” event. The weather was delightful, and the attendance was impressive with 200 people, including local residents and many national and international visitors.
A part of this year’s event, FOT launched a new program dubbed “Question Quest.” A fun scavenger hunt, it served not only as an educational element, but as a facilitating tool for the self-guided tour through the nine information stations. At the beach entrance, FOT greeters presented the guests with a pencil and the scavenger hunt sheet, explaining that each numbered question corresponded with its respective information station. The greeters encouraged everyone to return the completed sheets after visiting all stations to receive a prize. The enthusiasm was infectious, and people eagerly engaged inthe task. All presenters at the information stations were specialists in their fields from Rookery Bay, Collier County Park Service and the Marco Shell Club.
The number of people that returned their sheets for review to claim a prize was remarkable. Children selected from a basket filled with toy worms, glow-in-the-dark butterfly stickers, pencils, bubbles and a myriad of other fun items. Adults were fitted with nature themed T-shirts.
Of importance was the consensus that the specialists were most impressive in their demonstrations. In fact, many people requested that they keep their “Question Quest” sheets to use as a guide when they return with visiting house guests!
Additionally, the specialists engendered such positive feed back that many attendees opted to take advantage of FOT’s special Membership Offer. With a three-year new membership ora renewal, FOT gifted a logo embroidered cap. Other popular items were T-shirts adorned with the FOT logo — the beach boardwalk leading to the lagoon. Both the T-shirts and hats promote the education of Tigertail Beach’s intrinsic value and the preservation of this Marco Island gem.
The intent of the “Discover Tigertail Beach” event is to feature the natural treasures of the area and to encourage its maintenance and preservation. Thanks to Mother Nature for providing this venue and to the presenters for highlighting its unique elements.
The attendees were enthusiastic when they arrived and left even more enthusiastically following their morning of “Discover Tigertail Beach.” That certainly makes for a successful event! Thanks to all who attended, and hope you join us next year.
