Strideaway through Hideaway, the Kiwanis Club’s first ever Family 5K Run/Walk came a long way from inception to realization. Organizer George Sarantos was pleased with the 146 entrant turn out to this first of its kind event. The weather couldn’t have cooperated better; it was a gorgeous day and an extremely nice course. Kiwanis volunteers and Key Club members made sure everything ran smoothly. Park Rangers and Marco Island Police Department personnel did their part keeping the flow going.
Race sponsors included:
NCH, Winn Dixie, Hodge and Snyder, Mutual Bank of Omaha, Horizon Real Estate, Family Foot and Leg Center, Hideaway Beach, Collier County Parks and Rec, Condee Cooling and Electric, Coldstone Creamery, Sunshine Stitchers, Marco Office Supply, East Naples Chiropractic, Vohler, The Print Shop and Coastal Breeze News.
Funds raised will go to support the Kiwanis Eliminate Project. Event organizers, Dr.’s George Sarantos and Melissa Sarantos are the local Kiwanis representatives for the Eliminate Project. Kiwanis International and UNICEF have joined forces to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus. This deadly disease steals the lives of nearly 60,000 innocent babies and a significant number of women each year. The effects of the disease are excruciating — tiny newborns suffer repeated, painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and touch.
The 5k was professionally timed by Endurance Sports Timing with bib timing chips.
