The local Kiwanis Club is bringing an international campaign to a whole new level. The effort, called The Eliminate Project, is to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus (MNT).
Kiwanis International joined forces with UNICEF to further this mission. Each year, the deadly disease steals the lives of nearly 60,000 innocent babies and a significant number of women. The project will reach women in some of the poorest countries around the world. To eliminate MNT, more than 100 million mothers and babies must be immunized. Not an easy task considering the financial requirements to get the vaccines, medical supplies and volunteers the effort will take.
Locally, Dr. George Sarantos of the Kiwanis Club has taken the lead on this mission. He and his wife, Dr. Melissa Sarantos spent most of the summer organizing Strideaway through Hideaway, a 5K Family Fun-Run-Walk on Saturday, October 12. “Being a new father, The Eliminate Project was something I could relate to. I am very excited for runners and walkers to see the course and in turn, support this cause. Everyone should have a lot of fun!”
The start of the race and finish line will both be at Tigertail Beach which has the added benefit of offering plenty of parking for race-goers. The course meanders through scenic Hideaway Beach and back. Registration begins at 6:30 AM with start time at 8 AM. Awards will be given to the top male and female finishers of Open and Masters (40+) with awards going to the top three runners in each division.
Pre-registration is $20 for adults and $15 children. Custom designed shirts will go to every pre-registered runner and race day entrants while supplies last. Pre-register at www.runsignup.com. Water is being provided by Condee Cooling and Electric and timing by Endurance Sports Timing.
