About Special Olympics Florida – Collier County

Special Olympics is recognized as the most credible charitable organization in the country.  It has name recognition with 94% of the adult population.  Special Olympics was founded by Eunice Kennedy Shriver over 30 years ago to provide a year-round sports training and athletic competition program in Olympic-type sports (ranging from track & field to golf) for persons eight years of age and older with intellectual disabilities. This training and competition gives our athletes the opportunity to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of skills and friendship with other athletes and the community at large.

Our local program is a 100% volunteer grassroots organization.  The program is made possible only through the dedication of hundreds of volunteers who organize sports events, coach, publicize, raise funds and administer the organization. We receive no financial assistance from any outside agency and no government funding; therefore, an integral part of our fundraising is through generous in-kind donations of local businesses.
