If you read my last column, “If the Shoe Fits,” then you now know how important—I believe it is—to have a proper fit in your shoes.
In sports, shoes are a vital piece of equipment that can impact your performance abilities when competing and manufacturers specifically design shoes for support, comfort and safety.
While most players nowadays are conscious and aware of the importance of wearing shoes, which are specifically designed for tennis and pickleball, few players pay attention to the socks they are wearing along with these shoes.
Players will invest upwards of $100 for a pair of high-end, name–brand tennis or pickleball shoes, yet pay no attention to the quality—or lack of quality—in the socks they are wearing with those shoes when playing.
The truth is that wearing a sport sock that is specifically designed for extra cushioning will provide your feet with enhanced comfort and support.
With that said, most people are unaware of the fact that many players on the pro tour in tennis actually wear two pairs of socks.
The theory behind wearing two pair of socks is that it creates a situation where your foot is rubbing against another sock, instead of rubbing directly against the inside material of the shoe, which causes friction, which leads to blisters!
I like to wear a pair of thin bamboo material socks which have a nice soft silky feel to them, overlaid with a second pair of thick cotton socks, which provides extra cushioning between my foot and the materials lining the interior of my shoe.
In addition to making shoes, most manufacturers produce sport–specific socks and you can even company logo/color coordinate your socks to match your shoes!
My personnel choice of sport socks is made by a company named Thorlo. They make a wide variety of high-quality sport socks. While they are a bit pricey, they are specifically designed to provide cushioning for whatever sport you are wearing them for. And best of all, Thorlo is a 3rd generation family–owned company that manufactures their entire line of socks right here in the USA!
So, do your feet a favor and invest in a good pair of socks.
