Step Smart Collier and the South Regional Library will host a free Senior Safety Fair from 1 to 4 PM on Thursday, June 16, 2016, at the South Regional Library, located at 8065 Lely Cultural Parkway in Naples.
This free Senior Safety Fair focuses on fall prevention – the leading cause of injury and death to seniors. The program will feature table displays and demonstrations by the Supporting Partners of Step Smart Collier in addition to a formal presentation on the steps seniors can take to reduce the risk of falling.
Guests will have the opportunity to visit table displays and see demonstrations from local organizations, businesses and healthcare providers.
Mark Tesoro, MA, injury prevention educator for Lee Health System, will present “Reducing a Risk of a Fall” from 2-3 PM.
Falls are the leading cause of death and injury for seniors. In fact:
1 of 3 seniors fall annually
20% of seniors who fall are hospitalized with moderate to serious injuries
11% never return home
50% of those hospitalized pass away within one year
60% of falls happen in the senior’s home
Average fall death rate in Florida is 9%, but in Collier County its 14% – 55% higher than the statewide average
“There is no greater threat to Collier County seniors than suffering injury, disability or death from a fall. Learning ways to prevent falls increases a seniors quality of life which is the mission of Step Smart Collier,” explains Keith Dameron, Chair, Step Smart Collier and vice president, IBERIABANK.
The Step Smart Collier’s Senior Safety Fair is free and open to the public. Participants are encouraged to bring a list of their medications (prescriptions and over-the-counter) and participate in the free balance test.
