Kaitie Schlehr, Lighthouse of Collier Case Manager, has been selected by Southeastern Guide Dogs to be an official Puppy Raiser. As a puppy raiser, Kaitie will provide Carley, the new puppy, with home life experiences, while teaching her basic obedience. Puppy raisers take the puppies everywhere—to work, out to eat, on trips, and even grocery shopping. The dogs need real-world training in order for them to grow up to successfully guide a visually impaired person. The puppy-raising experience requires a great deal of commitment, time, energy, and focus. Once the dog has matured, Kaitie will say goodbye to Carley in 9 to 12 months when Carley returns to formal harness training with Southeastern Guide Dogs. Once the dog is fully trained, she will be matched up with her new visually impaired owner.
