When the COVID shutdown affected a number of the recreational activities here in Southwest Florida, boating became a great escape for many of our residents. A day out on the water was a great reprieve from being a shut-in, allowing enjoyment of some well sought-after change of scenery.
Boating has offered Americans a welcomed opportunity to travel and vacation in the midst of the tragic pandemic. The surge in boating has been evident from New England to Florida since late last Spring to today.
The Sailing Association of Marco Island (SAMI) wants to remind those of similar interests that it is now in the process of preparing its schedule and agenda of activities for the remainder of the fall and into the winter season. In spite of the current pandemic’s having required zoom meetings since the spring, a busy schedule of cruises and meetings with guest speakers is being planned for the upcoming season. SAMI monthly meetings always are enjoyable and informative.
Multiple cruises to fun places such as Panther Key, Marathon, Key West and other destinations are being planned. SAMI encourages all boaters (not just sailors) to join, especially those interested in learning more about navigation and seamanship. For those without much experience, there are plenty of experienced boaters in the organization to assist you. SAMI is planning a membership drive and is hoping for a lot of interest.
Fifty-one years ago, the SAMI members established themselves as an organization on the island to share their passion for the art of “sailing,” while enjoying all the wonders that the waters of Southwest Florida had to offer. Anyone with an interest in joining or learning more about the organization should contact Robin Singer at firstname.lastname@example.org or Ken Bardon at email@example.com.
