Marco Island’s Sunrise and Noontime Rotary Clubs sponsored attendance of five local students to the recent Seminar for Tomorrow’s Leaders (S4TL) conducted at Florida Southern College in Lakeland, Florida. The S4TL program is supported by 149 Rotary Clubs from Citrus County to Naples, across to Sebring, and up to east of Lakeland, Florida.

S4TL provides high school students entering 12th grade a summer experience to enhance already proven leadership and communications skills. The program is organized annually by a Board of Directors of Rotarians Senior Staff from Rotary Clubs in the S4TL area. The program also involves graduates of the program, based on their demonstrated leadership. One of the most interesting aspects of S4TL is the “Rap Sessions,” where delegates are divided into groups of 16-18 where they meet with Rotarians to discuss topics of interest. Both groups learn from each other.

To be considered for attendance, student applicants must have completed 11th grade, the student is scheduled for attendance in 12th grade in the fall and be recommended by a sponsoring Rotary Club along with the student’s school principal and parents. While in attendance in S4TL, the student’s day runs from approximately 7 AM to 11 PM, during which time they are exposed to nationally known speakers, coaches and volunteer Rotarians. Leadership training focuses on decision making, responsibility and community service.

Marco’s Rotary Clubs annually sponsor several students. This year’s S4TL attendees are Brendan Howard, Julia Wagner and Chelsea Casabona of Marco Island Academy; Quinnlan Varcoe of Lely High School, and Chrisla Pierre of Immokalee High School. The group agreed that much was learned and shared at S4TL.
