Marco Island Sunrise Rotary, in partnership with BabyBasics and the Marco Island Lutheran Church, has officially begun the monthly distribution of diapers to babies of low-income working families from Marco Island. BabyBasics is the only organization providing free diapers on a consistent basis to low-income working families in Collier County. The Sunrise Rotary Club obtained funding, storage and volunteers to facilitate the opening of BabyBasics tenth Collier County distribution site, specifically targeted to service needy babies from Marco Island.
Babies of working low-income families qualify for support if no other direct state or federal incomesupport is provided to the family. Families that receive support use the money they would normally spend on diapers to buy food, pay rent or purchase medicine for their babies. Jean Ann Lynch, founder and CEO of Collier County BabyBasics said, “The entire family feels the impact as BabyBasics also provides a supportive atmosphere and community for these struggling families. It is a simple program, but one that is so needed.”
Tess Axelrod, distribution site manager noted, “Through the generosity of the Marco Island Lutheran Church sufficient storage and a comfortable location was the last piece of the puzzle that came together for opening of our site. We are so grateful to the church.”
By bringing this support to Marco Island, the Sunrise Rotary Club not only expands the reach of BabyBasics, but convenience to currently enrolled clients whom no longer will have to make the trip to a Naples distribution site.
Financial eligibility for support from this program falls to the Women Infants and Children (WIC) Florida income guidelines, along with ongoing proof of employment. Qualified babies are enrolled through three years of age and extended on a case-by-case basis.
