Marco Island Center for the Arts is pleased to announce that Florida Gulf Coast University’s The Renaissance Academy will be presenting art history classes in January, February and March 2019 at the Art Center. Tickets are $20 for The Renaissance Academy and Art Center members and $25 for non-members. To register for classes call 239-434-4737 or go to RegisterRA.asapconnected.com.
Founded in January 2001, the Academy is the University’s and region’s premier lifelong learning program for adults. It is based on the premise that learning should never cease, that keeping the mind intellectually, creatively and culturally active fundamentally enriches and invigorates our lives.
The following are the upcoming classes being offered:
February 20, 1:30-3 PM; Jacques Louis David, Revolutionary Painter.
March 14, 1:30-3 PM; Music & Art Expressionism – Vincent Van Gogh and Arnold Schoenberg (The Starry Night / Trio from Suite for Piano).
In January’s class, The National Gallery collection will be explored including works from the Italian and Northern Renaissance periods; the Dutch Golden Age; British, Italian and French masters of the 18th and 19th centuries; and finally, the Impressionists.
Artist Jacques Louis David lived through the French Revolution and rose to prominence depicting Napoleon’s glory. In February, this ambitious, brilliant and unusual artist’s life and paintings will be examined.
In March, Van Gogh and Schoenberg and their relevance to Expressionistic movement will be discussed, as well as how composers transformed musical language in order to musically replicate artistic styles.
