The Relay For Life committee met Tuesday evening, January 22, in the boardroom of Keller Williams Realty. Relay Chair, Raul Medina, of SunTrust Bank called the meeting to order and recognized Donna Cottrell of Keller Williams who is chair of Teams for Relay, which will be held on the Charter Middle School campus on April 13, 2013. To date there are 20 paid teams including several on-line teams. Donna recognized a number of committee members whose teams have achieved top fundraising goals in the last several weeks.
Special recognition was given to Bonnie Geddis of Realty Executives, Cathy Nelson and Judy Mayo of the Marco Island Marriott Resort and Stephanie Zwade of Morgan Stanley. Stephanie was honored as the top fundraising participant. Marco Marriott was awarded “Jade Team” recognition for raising $10,000 to date for Relay.
Staff of the Marco Island Unit of the American Cancer Society reported that a long time favorite program, Look Good Feel Better, will resume at the American Cancer Society offices at 583 Tallwood Street. A licensed cosmetologist will be available by appointment to provide guidance and assistance selecting and applying make-up. The ACS has many wigs to choose from, cosmetics for a number of skin tones and other amenities to help women move forward in the next stage of their recovery.
A video, 212, was presented urging team leaders and members to go the extra degree: water is hot at 211 degrees and boils at 212 degrees. Fundraising can be raised that extra degree to rally the Marco community to make its best effort to support Relay. The film depicted survivors recognizing their own heroes, their caregivers, family and friends who laughed, cried, prayed, brought food, visited, watched over children and walked the walk with them. The survivors also paid tribute to the oncology professionals who worked so hard to help them wage their personal battle with cancer.
Judy Mayo of the Marriott showed T-shirts designed for small children, with a great promise for the future, eradicating cancer: When I grow up, cancer will be cured. The Marriott will be selling the shirts as part of their fundraising activities for Relay. The shirts will be available at the Marriott tent during Relay in April and will be sold by Marriott associates in advance of the day.
Donna Cottrell of Keller Williams described several creative ways to raise funds. “Paint The Town Purple” will kick off in early February. Local artists have been invited to submit paintings with the condition that the color purple be used in their artwork. Several works were on display during the evening and drew a very favorable response. The paintings will be displayed in high volume businesses and locations all around the island. The works will be awarded by a raffle and tickets will be available where the paintings are displayed and at the Marco Unit of the American Cancer Society.
Luminaria have been a central theme of the Marriott contribution to Relay for several years. The luminaria in the past, were safe candles set in bags of sand and placed around the courtyard of the Marriott. They were sold in memory of loved ones lost to cancer or in support of family members and friends who continue their battle. The luminaries were lighted at the end of a formal ceremony and families were invited to take their special luminary home.
This year luminaria will be sold by several teams and will include a can of food on which a candle will be placed. Bags can be decorated to signify the honoree and the local schools will be invited to assist with the artwork.
Fun games will be available at several tents during Relay. Games, face painting, specialty foods, beverages and some surprise activities will be on scene including a children’s supervised play area.
The next party for Relay For Life of Marco Island will be held at Charter Middle School on Tuesday, February 19. Another important date to remember is a fashion show sponsored by new team, Bistro Soleil, on Tuesday, March 5th.
