It was a festive evening in the Marco Island Charter Middle School gym as Marco Island Academy won their third straight PCAC championship with a three-game win over Everglades City on Wednesday, October 7th. To top things off, the Rays also celebrated their lone senior, Megan Sweeney, on Senior Night.
PCAC is the acronym for Paradise Coast Athletic Conference, consisting of Everglades City, Marco Island Academy, Mason Classical Academy, Donahue Academy and The Village School. The Rays have won the conference championship in volleyball every year since the conference was founded 3 years ago, according to MIA Athletic Director Ryan Roberts.
The Marco girls were never really challenged in defending their conference championship, winning 25-16, 25-19, 25-13 over the Gators. A day earlier, the Rays avenged a season-opening 3-2 loss at St. John Neumann by beating the Celtics 3-2 at the MICMS gym. The Rays won the first game 25-15 before dropping the next two games by identical 25-18 scores. Down two games to one, the Rays showed resolve, winning the fourth game 25-20 and taking the finale 15-12.
“I thought we played well,” said Alyssa Stolanis, “it’s always a good competition when we play Everglades City. We played well, we played together, we played as a team. We had a great game last night that prepared us for tonight. We won in five over Neumann. We have a great group of girls. It’s a great accomplishment winning the conference championship.”
The Rays play the winner of the First Baptist Academy-Seacrest match for the district championship on Thursday, October 15 at the MICMS gym.
