It’s that time again! Randy Wayne White has a new book coming out titled GONE (Putnam, On Sale: September 4), the first in a new series with a female protagonist.
After nearly 20 bestselling Doc Ford novels, Randy Wayne White has become one of the most popular thriller-writers in the nation whose audience and reputation only continue to grow. Now in GONE, White introduces readers to Hannah Smith, a strong, formidable woman, the descendant of generations of resourceful Florida women (with a touch of the wild side). While White has always created layered female supporting characters, Hannah is a perfect complement to Doc Ford. Set in the world fans have come to love so well, White once again captures the true spirit and essence of the land, its people, and its ecology—and introduces readers to an unforgettable new heroine. He will be coming to Fort Myers and Naples for the following events:
Marco Island, FL
Tuesday, September 4, 3:00 PM

Friday, September 7, 11:00 AM

Randy Wayne White is a celebrity in Florida and his countless adventures (from being fishing guide, getting stabbed in Peru, transporting Cuban refugees, and stealing one of General Manuel Noriega’s bar stools, to name a few) have informed his work. Randy Wayne White can discuss at length the real-world inspirations he used to craft GONE as well as the colorful women he’s known (both in his family and female fishing guides around Sanibel) who helped him create the character of Hannah and his own years spent captaining a charter-fishing boat. He can also share his insider knowledge about the area he writes about along the Gulf Coast of Florida (Sanibel, Captiva, Ten Thousand Islands, etc).
· Randy is well-versed in local environmental issues including land preservation and inhumane Tarpon fishing. He’s as in tune with serious Florida issues much like the late John D. McDonald and Randy is also one of the few Editors At Large at Outside Magazine (Jon Krakauer, Hampton Sides and Tim Cahill are the others).
· Original Location: This is a unique part of Florida that no one knows better than Randy. He lives on Sanibel and also owns an old Florida Cracker house, built on the remnants of a shell pyramid of the Calusa Indians, where it’s easy to find pottery that dates back to the time of the Maya. It’s an ancient place, beautiful by day, haunting by night, and his dock is a popular place to meet and socialize at sunset. You can also regularly find him at Doc Ford’s Restaurant on Sanibel.
Some background on GONE:
Hannah Smith (who fans might remember from his book Captiva) lives on the Gulf Coast just across the bay from Sanibel Island and works as a fishing guide. She also inherited a small investigation agency on the side, an endeavor she wasn’t planning on doing anything with. However, her ability to act under pressure during a storm impresses her wealthy client who realizes she is just the right person to track down his missing niece––a woman who stands to inherit a vast $90 million sum. Hannah must follows a trail of clues that lead her from the enclaves of the rich living on Captiva Island to the mangrove swamps of the Ten Thousand Islands and deep into the recesses of Florida—places you don’t find on tourist maps. While White has always created layered female supporting characters, Hannah is a perfect complement to Doc Ford. Set in the world fans have come to love so well, White once again captures the true spirit and essence of the land, its people, and its ecology—and introduces readers to an unforgettable new heroine.
GONE is a great milestone in Randy Wayne White’s career – richly imagined and populated with a cast of original characters (along with some surprising cameos from Doc Ford and Tomlinson). A finished book should be landing on your desk shortly.
