The second Annual Queen for a Day luncheon and fashion show sponsored by Liz Havens of Skin Renewal Systems and the Island Country Club Charitable Foundation was held on Friday, December 9 for the benefit of the Joy of Giving.
The event is one of several fund raisers held to help underprivileged children of our area to have a merrier Christmas. Many families are feeling the crunch of the poor economy from single moms to out of work parents. It’s not so much about giving toys to children as it is about giving hope tofamilies in need.
This year’s Joy of Giving featured a fashion show presented by Chloe’s Boutique and Georgie’s Shoe Resort. The models hair and make-up was done by Skin Renewal Systems staff. A raffle was held awarding a day of beauty from Skin Renewal Systems which includes hair cut and style, facial, massage, manicure and pedicure. The reigning winner of last year’s grand prize, Cheryl Corley, crowned this year’s surprised winner Mary Lou Cunningham. Second prize winners were awarded $200 gift certificates from Chloe’s and Georgie’s.
The event organizer, Nicki Davis, introduced Howard and Michelle Jordan who were influential inencouraging her to form the fundraiser more than 20 years ago to help poor parents purchase Christmas gifts for their children. The board members meet with representatives of local schools to develop a list of needy families. The families are screened and given a card stating their spending limit based on the number of children in the family.
On December 17, the families, along with representatives from their schools, will be at Walmart early in the morning to allow the families to shop for appropriate and needed Christmas gifts for their children. This year’s goal is to raise $85,000 to help 1,150 children.
