Q&A with Simba

This column is the opinion of a 3 year old African Grey Parrot named “Simba” who has an extremely high intelligence level. While he does not possess a degree from any college or university, he does have a strong opinion of himself and feels that he is the best candidate to answer the complex questions of today’s discerning pets…and the humans they own…

Dear Simba,

I’ve read your column in the past issues of Coastal Breeze and they are very intriguing to say the least. Your advice and input on helping out today’s metro pet and their humans is some of the best publications I have read. With more and more pets being adopted and complimenting family lives, I see they tend to admirably become an actual family member. Being new here to Marco Island I see we have a Dog Park. I enjoy going out to dinner and going to the different diversified areas of Marco Island but I would love to take my beloved Chihuahua with me as well. She has been my life for 6 years and right now, it’s just her and me. I have neglected to take her with me because I just don’t know if a pet will be well received by people trying to enjoy their dinner and there doesn’t seem to be a list of pet friendly restaurants and areas of Marco Island. If there is such a list could you please post it? As I said, I am a newcomer to Marco Island so this might be helpful for other newcomers with pets now and in the future.

Signed, Dining Out In Marco

Dear Dining Out,

FOOD!!! Now this is a great subject! I love food, I could eat all day. I have also frequented some of the best restaurants on Marco Island so I can safely give you my take and two cents on dining out in pet friendly restaurants on the island. Bringing a canine to dinner with you is much better received than bringing a bird, so if they accepted me being there you will have no problem. The first thing you want to

do is check to see what restaurants have outside dining facilities. Usually if the restaurant has outside dining, pets are very well received as dining companions.

There are many pet friendly restaurants on the Island. Some even have snacks behind the bar for your canine companion and with the frequency of my personal appearances at these dining establishments, some of them actually have bird treats. If not they bring me out a bowl of complimentary fruits and vegetables (I’m a celebrity around here…did I mention that?). The Marco Walk, across from the Hilton Hotel, has a very nice courtyard with several restaurants ready to cater to you and yours. There’s also the Marco Town Center which has mostly all outside dining as well. Olde Marco is a beautiful little village that is quaint and quiet with a lovely setting as well (and the Coastal Breeze headquarters is there…tell them I sent you). Goodland is also a nice place for pets and their human counterparts and last but not least, The Esplanade. The Esplanade is more on the fine dining side so you must be sure that your companion is well behaved. Be aware though that not all outside dining is pet friendly. While there are several places at the hotels on the beach that have dining outside, the hotels themselves are not pet friendly so, therefore, the restaurants are not. If you like bringing your dog to the beach the only one is in Bonita Springs.

So you see, there are plenty of areas for you and your beloved little “Diva” dog can frequent together. Marco Island is by far one of the most pet friendly areas in the country and some places even have bowls of fresh ice water specifically designated for you. They all treat you like royalty when you come in for that fabulous meal. Marco Island is a fantastic place to live no matter if you are human, canine, feline or of the avian species (such as myself)…just stick to the outside dining areas and you’ll have no problems.

Bon Appétit, Simba
