If you’re lucky, you will get a glimpse of a faithful group of residents adorned in colorful costume as they parade down the street. Some play drums, some dance, and some carry images of the Virgin Mary. The faithful make the annual trek to commemorate Our Lady of Guadalupe. The walk stretches from Kretch’s Restaurant, down Bald Eagle to San Marco Road continuing to San Marco Catholic Church where Massis celebrated.
A statue of the Virgin Mary is carried the entire route to the church. In Latin America, the faithful believe Our Lady of Guadalupe showed herself to Saint Juan Diego in 1531. She is known for being a protector to the oppressed. In this parade, the traditional image of Our Lady of Guadalupe is everywhere. It’s an opportunity for a small community within our community to gather together to honor their heritage by expressing their faith in the traditional ways of their country.
