Some of the television commercials will disappear, along with a number of campaign signs. Not so fast! The primary election is over, but November looms in most races.
For Marco Islanders the most significant results are these:
For United States Senate: Connie Mack ( R ) will face Bill Nelson (D)
For United States Congress: Trey Radel ( R) will face Jim Roach (D)
For the Florida House of Representatives, incumbent Kathleen Passidomo ( R) easily won, and will face Libertarian candidate Peter Richter in November.
In Collier County Sheriff Kevin Rambosk, Clerk of Courts Dwight Brock, Property Appraiser Abe Skinner and Tax Collector Ted ray were all re-elected.
For Circuit Court Judges, Lisa Spader Porter unseated Joe Simpson; while Meg Steinbeck, George Richards and Joe Porter were re-elected.
At the County Court level, Mike Carr was re-elected, but Eugene Turner will face Jim McGarity in a November run-off election.
Of great interest to Marco Islanders, in District 1, incumbent Collier Commission member Donna Fiala, with over two-thirds of the vote cast, easily defeated Steve Cosgrove. Commissioner Fiala will be up against Russell Kish, no party affiliation, in November.
Commissioner Tom Henning narrowly defeated challenger Bill McDaniel in District 3, and will not have any opposition in November.
The race that may affect Marco Island took place in District 3, where Tim Nance defeated incumbent Jim Coletta. Nance will run against Democrat John Lundin in November. If Nance wins, as expected, the complexion of voting on the County Commission may change. Commissioner Coletta often sided with Commissioners Fiala and Coyle on County issues.
There was an overwhelming for the straw referendum proposal that Marco Islanders tax themselves to maintain a 24-hour walk-in clinic. Almost three fourths of the voters rejected the proposal. With the defeat, it is extremely likely that Physicians Regional Hospital will continue to go ahead with its program to provide an advanced 12-hour clinic on the Island.
Hideaway Beach voters approved a beach renourishment bond proposal.
