It could have been a gathering of movie stars. Some simply extras, others stars of the show – of the car variety, that is. They could have come from films such as Caddyshack, Days of Thunder, The Matrix, National Lampoon’s Vacation, Patriot Games, Cars, Sixteen Candles, Scarface, Taxi Driver, Annie Hall or Bull Durham. And maybe some of them did.
On Sunday, November 3, 32 Porsches of all colors, years, varieties and personal tastes converged on restaurant Marker 8.5 in Goodland for a typical outing of the Everglades Region Porsche Club of America. The parking lot overflowedwith the fast and fabulous sports cars. Held outside at 8.5’s “Goodland Yacht Club,” Porsche enthusiasts had much more to do than simply eat, drink and compare what’s under their hoods.
“We certainly have quite a bit of fun as a club,” explained Mrs. Branston, wife of president of the regional chapter, Chris Branston. She continued to explain the goal of the day’s outing. Porsche owners traversed Collier County, traveling through Naples, Cape Coral, Immokalee and down to Goodland in a most interesting scavenger hunt-type challenge. Every car was given a list of 40 questions to answer depending onlocations as well as 14 photos to identify along the way. Once they arrived at Marker 8.5 – the final destination – they were to construct a simple origami car out of construction paper.
Similar events are held throughout the year, creating a fun and inventive way for club members to enjoy their beautiful vehicles. New, old and a symbol of luxury and horsepower, every Porsche was beautiful in its own way.
After the long, yet lovely drive, and all the scavenger hunt paperwork was filled out, it was time to pig out! Marker 8.5 provided an outstanding array offood, including fresh fruit, pasta salad, shrimp cocktail and chicken, beef and grouper sliders.
Beautiful weather, a setting on the water, a fabulous fleet of vehicles and good times among friends – it seems as if the Everglades Region Porsche Club of America knows how to throw one heck of a party – along with the help of a great restaurant, of course.
