This year’s tournament takes on added significance because it is now named after Dick Shanahan, who was one of the founders of the Police Foundation. Shanahan passed away last year and was known for his volunteer work and philanthropy throughout Marco Island.
Organizers also announced that a portion of tournament proceeds would be dedicated to Hurricane Irma recovery efforts.
“While Marco’s citizens begin the process of rebuilding, it’s important that we all return to our normal, daily lives,” said Marco Police Foundation President Dick Adams. “This tournament is a great opportunity to remember the great work of Dick Shanahan, contribute to relief efforts, support those that support us and have a little fun.”
“Our experience here on Marco Island over the last few weeks clearly demonstrates the importance and commitment of our first responders,” added Adams. “This golf tournament is a great way to demonstrate your support for our police officers on Marco Island, as well as help those less fortunate deal with the aftermath of Irma.”
The Marco Island Police Foundation is a community-based, nonpolitical, civic-minded, charitable organization that works closely with the Marco Island Police Department to encourage and promote citizen participation in maintaining community safety. The foundation honors our police officers through special recognition programs, and assists our officers and their children with continuing education and other challenges when necessary.
