Police Department reorganization

Marco Island’s Police Department is reorganizing. It’s a move calculated to assure greater efficiency and furnish increased security while improving cost effectiveness. Police Chief Don Hunter and City Manager Jim Riviere have developed a new structure for the department.

In place of an organization that had department components reporting to the Chief through an Assistant Chief there will be four functions directly responsible to the Chief. They are:

• The Assistant Chief, who will be responsible for a variety of functions, including support services such as evidence and records, police officer school resource, recruiting, training, public information, administrative services, auxiliary police officers, reserve officers and community volunteer specialists.

• The Investigations Sergeant, who will supervise the three primary detective functions, including narcotics, vice, intelligence, general crimes, and computer support services for detective operations.

• An Operations Patrol Lieutenant, who will be responsible for supervising three regular shifts and a special “flex” unit of three officers. They will be assigned to operations requiring assistance for any particular requirement; filling in vacancies and maintaining inter agency mutual aid.

• The Supervisor of Code Compliance, responsible for all code compliance operations. All code compliance will remain under the supervision of the Police Department as a civilian component.

City Manager Riviere explained that: “Chief Hunter, Dave Baer and I have devoted ourselves to developing an organization that will provide the level of service our community deserves at the most cost effective basis. We are delighted that Chief Hunter has agreed to serve for an additional two years and continue supervising our outstanding department. The new organizational structure streamlines operations and will bring about more efficiency, while maintaining excellent supervision. In recent months, as some veteran officers have retired, Chief Hunter has brought in a number of fine new officers to continue our excellent operations without any gap in coverage.”

“The recent operation in which our department, in cooperation with a number of other government agencies, and acting with a search warrant, discovered evidence indicating forged prescriptions, and additional evidence of unlawful possession of controlled substances is only one excellent example of the high level performance of our Police Department. Along with our devotion to first-rate law enforcement, Chief Hunter and I are pledged to maintaining strict bottom line controls on expenses. The new organization will meet our objectives.”

Dr. Riviere also announced that: “I am pleased to report that Pete Beucler has returned to our Police Department as Senior Community Services Officer. He will serve in a civilian capacity in the Code Compliance function, and by performing several community service functions that were previously performed by uniformed officers. It’s a highly valued utility position relieving uniformed officers for other duties. He is a great asset to the department, and we welcome him back.”
