There is a new “sheriff in town” and she has the position of Planning Board Chairperson. Her name is Claire Babrowski and she and her husband live in Hideaway Beach. She comes with a considerable resume from the business world and is now in her third year on the board, having been nominated by Councilor Larry Honig.
She began her corporate experience from the ground up so to speak, beginning her career at McDonald’s Corporation at the age of 16, flipping hamburgers and would late spend 30 years in various roles, including direct responsibility for McDonald’s Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa operations, and eventually serving as senior executive vice president and chief restaurant operations officer.
She then spent a short time at Radio Shack during a time of turmoil, from 2005 to 2006. Ms. Babrowski worked for RadioShack Corporation serving as executive vice president, then president, chief operating officer and acting chief executive officer after the resignation of avid Edmondson due to his embellishment of his educational resume.
She then moved on to serve as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Toys “R” Us, Inc. from 2007 to 2010.
Ms. Babrowski later served on the Board of Directors of a number of large companies, including Pier 1 Imports, The Delhaize Group and QCE Finance LLC, the parent company of Quiznos. Ms. Babrowski had also previously served as a director and chairman of Chipotle Mexican Grill, Inc.
In 2007, Ms. Babrowski was named by “FORTUNE” as 37th on the list of the 50 most powerful woman executive in the world due to her credentials and achievements. In 2009, she was named 17th on the list of the top 19 most influential women, which included names such as Condoleezza Rice, Meg Whitman, Carrie Cox and Susan Thomson to name a few.
Claire attended the University of Illinois and holds an MBA from the University of North Carolina.
She has served the last year on the board as the Vice-Chairperson and was elected by her fellow board members to the Chairman’s position.
The Planning Board will be dealing with a number of interesting challenges during the upcoming year. Those challenges will range from a review of the city’s comprehensive plan to another debate regarding where and if an Assisted Living Facility (ALF) might be a wise choice for being located on the island.
We will highlight the background of the newly elected Vice-Chairman of the board, Jason Bailey in our next edition.
