Paws for Patriots provides guide dogs to blinded soldiers and veteran assistance dogs to vets suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder as well as other disabling conditions. On behalf of the American heroes who sacrificed so much, a Paws for Patriots program was developed to help these veterans maintain their dignity and independence. “Each year, the Florida Association of Realtors (FAR) endorses a charity.

This past year, the Marco Island Area Association of Realtors (MIAAOR) was pleased to support Paws for Patriots in conjunction with FAR,” said Bill Filbin, President of the MIAAOR, and a veteran himself. “Keep in Touch was kind enough to help us get the word out and set up a place where anyone could make a donation.” Jiri Mikulinec and Mike Held, co-owners of Keep In Touch, commented they were pleased to help such a worthy program. Mike is also a veteran. He turned over a check to Bill for the donations collected, plus some.

The Paws for Patriots program has dogs which are trained for three different levels of service:

• Guide dogs for the visually impaired veteran which includes a 26 day training program for the veteran at their facility with certified trainers.

• Veteran Assistance Dogs are taught specialized commands which help in a variety of ways including reintegration into everyday living and personal security.

• Facility Therapy Dogs spend their days with a volunteer handler amidst wounded warriors recovering at military hospitals and veterans’ medical centers.

‘Paws for Patriots’ believe doctors heal the body while their dogs help heal the soul.
