I am going to break away from the topic of golf instruction for one publication, and talk about a very important charitable foundation.
On Saturday, March 14th Hideaway Beach Club hosted the 1st Annual Hideaway Beach Club Patriot Golf Day. Hideaway and many clubs around the nation raise money for the Folds of Honor Foundation by running Patriot Golf Days throughout the year. The mission statement of the Folds of Honor Foundation is written as such:
Honoring Their Sacrifice, Educating Their Legacy. Of the one million-plus dependents adversely affected by deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, nearly nine out of 10 do not qualify for federal scholarship assistance. Folds of Honor seeks to meet this need by providing annual educational scholarships to the military families of those who have been killed or disabled while in active duty. These help support private education tuition, tutoring and educational summer camps for children K-12, as well as higher education tuition assistance for spouses and children. Since its founding in 2007, the organization is proud to have awarded over 7,500 scholarships, including over 2,000 in 2014 alone.
During a cookout in-between shotguns we had a 10-15 minute ceremony that included a recorded speech by Dan Rooney, founder of the Folds of Honor Foundation, on how the Foundation was conceived and established. Members of the Gulf Coast High School JROTC performed the National Anthem and cadets from Lely High School JROTC presented the colors. Hideaway residents and guests acknowledged all veterans present at the ceremony.
Additional donations were gratefully accepted throughout the day. Hideaway Beach Club residents, ever generous, raised over $4000 for the Folds of Honor Foundation.
Dan Rooney is the founder of the Folds of Honor Foundation, PGA of America member, golf course owner, and war veteran. He has asked all 28,000 PGA of America members and the facilities where they are employed, to help to support educational opportunities for the families of servicemen and women who have sacrificed so much for us. Hideaway is proud to help the cause and will continue to do so yearly. Please go to www.foldsofhonor.org for more details about this wonderful charitable organization.
