Did you know that there are over 750 students combined in Tommie Barfield Elementary School and Manatee Elementary School? Can you imagine a teacher being asked to pick the “Terrific Kid” of the month from their 3rd, 4th and 5th graders? When you put everything into perspective, you can see why children selected as a “Terrific Kid” really are special.

The Kiwanis Club of Marco Island honored the recipients of the “Terrific Kid” award at their Thursday morning meeting. Gayle Thawley and Gina Sisbarro did a great job in talking with the children to learn more about them, their interests and their families. Third grader, Selena Montalvo from Manatee Elem said her favorite class was math which delighted Ms. Thawley since she is a retired math teacher. Carolina Medellin, a 4th grader from Manatee Elem. has already earned 321 steps to the 400 book challenge. Boosted as a great leader by his teacher, Kevin Chery, the 5th grade student from Manatee Elem was proud to receive his award. The 5th grade Tommie Barfield Elem School recipient, Danya Zarate, loves adventure and proved it in her selection of favorite book and movie. Ryan Witthoff has aspirations of being a basketball player and possible reporter as a 4th grader at Tommie Barfield. Inventing a solar car is just one of the great things Sebastian Haedelt, 3rd grader at Tommie Barfield Elementary, wants to do in his lifetime.  Now you can see why these children truly are ‘TERRIFIC KIDS”.

Feel free to attend a breakfast meeting with the Kiwanis Club of Marco Island.  Meetings are held every Thursday at 7:30 a.m. at O’Donoghue’s Irish Pub located at 969 N. Collier Blvd. (Royal Palm Building). Learn how you can make a difference in the lives of our children whether you are here year round or just for a short visit.
