Many compliments can be made about Marco Island; its remarkable weather, the spectacular beach, great schools, wonderful restaurants and its consistent rating as one of the safest cities in Florida to live.
All of these items and more are important, but nothing is more important than the quality of its people and their willingness to support the many wonderful causes and programs that exist on the island.
Since 2008, one of those outstanding organizations on the island has been the Optimist Club of Marco Island (OCMI). Their organization has provided organized team sports for Marco Island children. Those programs would be lacking if not for their efforts.
Basketball, soccer and football are but just a few of their offerings and the programs are open to all Marco Island children.
The Optimist Club sponsors the “Derby-De-Mayo” every year at the Sunset Grille through the generosity of Jennifer and Keith Reeves, the owners of the popular beachfront restaurant and active supporters of the OCMI.
OCMI President Meg Bonos complimented the Reeves and all their corporate sponsors at the event. “If it were not for the generosity of our supporters and events such as this, we couldn’t provide the services we do to our residents and their children,” said Bonos.
For the event, the Reeves closed their restaurant for the entire afternoon, which saw an overflow crowd gather to feast on great food, enjoy cold beverages, bid on silent auction items and bet on their favorite horses.
You may find more information and volunteer opportunities regarding the programs run by the OCMI on both their Facebook page or by visiting their website at www.mioptimistclub.org.
