When one Marco Island mom gets an idea, has the energy of the Energizer bunny and passion to boot, an idea takes flight! “This is something that I have thought about for a while,” said Bonnie Zaikov Geddis, “a locally-focused calendar featuring some of the wonderful mothers of Marco Island. The Marco Mom calendar seems like a great way to get people together, have some fun and raise money for a good cause at the same time.”
The Marco Mom calendar is in the initial production stages. A number of familiar names have already signed on as models including; Michelle Jordan, Upon a Star Foundation, Janalyn Vanderjagt, a former Indiana Colts cheerleader, Karen Young, a former cover girl, Miranda Curiale, owner of La Miranda’s Nail Spa, Jessica Wallet of South Beach Hair and the Marriott Salon, Kira Krumm, owner of Kira Krumm Design, Sasha Popoff of Rick’s Island Salon, Marsha Warnike, local realtor, mother of four and grandmother of three, Kellie Burns, news anchor at NBC-2 and of course, Bonnie. The entire project is being professionally photographed byPeter Berec. Georgie Doll and Heidi Donato from Georgie’s will handle fashion for each model and islander Bill Young has generously offered the use of his valuable auto collection as a backdrop for the models.
How did Bonnie come up with the idea? She had a friend diagnosed with cancer. Bonnie and her eight year old daughter, Nicole, wanted to do something for their friend. Little Nicole, along with a friend, walked the neighborhood and raised over $200 which was donated to the American Cancer Society on Marco Island. “We’ve all lost someone to this disease and I decided if Nicole was in, I was in! We joined the Relay for Life event and put our focus on raising money. The Marco Mom calendar is the culmination of my ties to Marco Island and my desire to make an impact in a meaningful way. All proceeds from the calendar will be donated to fight cancer.”
Bonnie certainly isn’t new to fundraising. She worked on an auction event for the American Heart Association for three years running. She was a Children’s Hospital board memberand chairman of VIP events raising money for Kids with Cancer. At the time she worked in television and co-worker Kellie Burns assisted by hosting the event. She was the liaison between the Fort Myers Canterbury High School and ABC-TV Kidfest event, All About Kids. She was a fundraising committee member for the Island Montessori Academy and the list goes on. So, whether it was a local golf event, raising money for Senior Friendship or serving on the Student Advisory Council at Tommie Barfield Elementary, Bonnie has always had a passion for contributing to a cause.
As the mother of Nicole and four year old Sara, Bonnie is a successful active real estate agent, too. The friends and contacts she has made over the years blend perfectly to make this project feasible.
