The first Calusa Garden Club meeting of the year was held on October 8. Dale DeFeo, president of the club, also presented a program entitled “The Secrets of Sansavarias.” Sansavarias are plants seen all-over Southwest Florida and are commonly called Snake Plant or Mother-in-law’s Tongue. Those in attendance left with new-found knowledge and respect for the plant seen daily in local landscapes. Dale is a National Garden Club Five Star Member and holds Master status in Gardening Studies, Landscape Design, Environmental Study, and Floral Design. She is a National Garden Club Horticulture Instructor and teaches nationally and is also a member of the American Horticultural Society and National Orchid Society.

The second meeting of the year will be held on November 12. The program will be a “Small Petite Standard Flower Show” which will be judged by three local judges from the greater Naples area. In addition to giving their critiques, the judges will explain the judging process. The show will consist of only petite designs and dwarf/naturally small horticulture exhibits.

The Calusa Garden Club meets monthly from October through April. Most meetings are held at 1:00 p.m. in Fellowship Hall of Wesley United Methodist Church, 350 South Barfield. Prior to the meeting, at 11:00 a.m., informal design workshops are held for members and visitors. Non-members are invited to programs at a charge of $5.00. Membership information can be found on the Calusa.org website or by calling 239-404-5746.
