The Newcomers Club welcomed its snowbirds back to the flock last week with an elegant luncheon and fashion show at the Marco Island Marriott Beach Resort. “It was a wonderful luncheon and a time to catch up with old friends,” said Luisa Maldonado-Stiers, club historian and publicist.
More than 100 women descended on the hotel for their seasonal reunion. The Newcomers Club has 235 members, two-thirds of which are “snowbirds,” according to Stiers. The event marked the “kick-off” for the 2014-15 calendar of social and service events on Marco Island.
The fashion portion of the luncheon showcased a variety of day and evening wear from local shops, including Swim’n Sport, Sweet Waters at the Marriott, Patchington and Kays on the Beach. The models— all Newcomer members — were styled at the Marriott Spa and Salon and wore Jewelry by Laura, also of the Marriott.
Newcomers was founded 44 years ago, and during that period, has welcomed approximately 6,000 women from across the globe. “The objective of the club is to promote friendship among the women who live in and around Marco Island,” remarked President Helen McCullough. In addition to monthly luncheons and evening social activities, the group is involved in Meals for Hope and the island’s annual Christmas Parade. Mini-clubs based on individual interests also provide activities for members interested in cooking, painting, creative writing, bridge and needlework, to name a few.
