The joyous sight of a fully lit, towering Christmas tree on Marco Island is a sure sign that the holiday season has arrived!
In a community-wide celebration, a brand-new 40-foot-high Christmas tree was ceremoniously lit at dusk at Veterans Community Park. The new Christmas tree replaced a 15-year-old tree that had been donated by the Italian American Society. The old tree was refurbished and relocated to Founder’s Park.
Thousands of people of all ages were in attendance to enjoy the lineup of entertainment, tailgating, and of course, the spectacular and dramatic tree lighting. Children from local schools performed dance and song routines throughout the evening, ringing in the holiday spirit.
Christmas Island Style organizes this fun annual event, which has become one of the most well-attended and most anticipated of the holiday season. Christmas Island Style organizes many activities and events for the community, such as Santa’s Arrival, the street and boat parades, the Holiday Pet Parade and more. The group, made entirely of volunteers, fundraises throughout the year to bring these events to the island, free of charge.
“It is just spectacular,” said Wanda Burson, a member of the Christmas Island Style Committee. “None of us has ever seen it before. We did the research and did our best and it came out beyond our expectations,” she added.
Barbara Dasti, also a committee member, standing alongside her husband Carmen, was unable to hold back her emotions as a tear ran down her face and a smile broke out from ear to ear. “It’s beautiful, just beautiful,” said Dasti.
Police Chief Al Schettino was in attendance with his wife and daughter. “This is one of my favorite events,” he said. “Everyone is just having a great time; it’s what makes this such a great community.”
