New Book Takes Comprehensive Look at RTI: Authors provide practical tools for implementation

Response to Intervention (RTI) is one of the most important educational initiatives in recent history and plays a key role in teacher education and practice. In The Complete Guide to RTI: An Implementation Toolkit (2012), published by Corwin, authors Dolores Burton and John Kappenberg offer a user-friendly introduction to using RTI to improve outcomes for all students.

The book demonstrates innovative ways to use RTI to inform instruction and guide curriculum development in inclusive classroom settings. School RTI implementation teams will find strategies, techniques, and checklists for evaluating existing programs and implementing RTI effectively. The book’s broad perspective includes:

  • A concise description of RTI’s history and evolution
  • A leadership framework for school and district administrators
  • Applications in reading and literacy, mathematics, and behavior support
  • Guidelines for involving parents, students, and communities

Co-Author Dolores Burton, EdD, has spent 36 years in education as a teacher, administrator, professional developer, consultant, and author of instructional software and numerous publications. She taught courses at SUNY at Stony Brook and currently is a professor and chair of the Division of Teacher Education at New York Institute of Technology.   Dolores is one of Marco Island’s newest residents.

Co-Author John Kappenberg, EdD, has spent 40 years in education as teacher, professor, district administrator, writer, speaker, and consultant to school districts and professional organizations. He has been director of research, planning, and quality at the Sewanhaka Central High School District in New York, where he led its long-term strategic planning program, and director of educational leadership and technology at New York Institute of Technology.
