The Naples Civitan Club was formed by Civitan International Past President Sydney Fishman in June 1989. This Civitan Club has been serving the Naples community during all its thirty years with an emphasis on those suffering from developmental disabilities, and encouraging its members to participate in fund raisers for projects which benefit the community and to volunteer in worthy causes.
Syd Fishman was a World War II veteran who won the French Legion Medal of Honor while surviving the Battle of the Bulge. He was an usher at the FDR’s first inauguration in 1936 and dedicated 25 years of his life to serve the Naples community through Civitan. He was someone so involved, not only for keeping the freedom of our Great Nation, but socially as meeting President Carter, singing with Frank Sinatra, working with the Shrivers on Special Olympics and CEO of his construction/property management corporation until his death in January 2015 at the age of 94 years young. At that time, he was the club chair of two projects: Claxton Fruitcake sales fundraiser and Supplies for Soldiers. On his 93rd birthday party, he asked family and friends to donate items for this project and monetary donations for their shipment too. He was able to raise $1,500 for the shipment of a crate with the items he collected. He is surely missed!
Recently, a group of Civitans, families and friends gathered at Erin’s Isle Restaurant at the Club’s 9th Annual Shining Stars Show Dinner-Dance. Club President William Shanahan welcomed the group to the celebration and mentioned the recent passing of one of the members who was part of the club from its beginnings, Carolyn Ferguson. She always participated in the club’s projects and even helped to sell Claxton Fruitcake this last December at Terracina Grand where she was living. She was always ready to dance at the Shining Stars Show. She was 99 years young.
Civitan FL District Past Governor and President of the Marco Island Civitan Club, Robert Kircher, gave a brief history of the club and some of the projects during all these years, like the Valentine’s Dinner-Dance for members of FDD (Foundation for the Developmentally Disabled), now StarAbility. He congratulated all the members for their dedication and volunteer work.
Civitan FL District Area 5 Director Nery Kircher recognized Tony Dodge for his kindness and donations through his “Bingo with an Attitude” games at different venues. He has been donating 10% of the sales of the bingo cards to different non-profit organizations, especially the Collier Civitans. He received the Shining Star 2019 Award.
The event had great musicians entertaining. Musician and singer Hank Scholz in duet with Bonnie Lancaster played beautiful melodies. Then vocalist Marco Kircher delighted the group singing great songs and music for them to dance. Even Kal and Ruth Faye could not contain themselves!
Attendees participated in the raffle and silent auction to help the Club fundraise. It was a nice celebration of the Naples Civitan Club 30th Anniversary!
