Myrt Rose Receives Lifetime Achievement Award

The Chamber of Commerce had plenty of reasons to party with the graduation of their 2018 Leadership Marco class, the Installation of the 2019 Board of Director at an elegant evening at Hideaway Beach while also awarding a Lifetime Achievement Honor to Myrt Rose.

Dianna Dohm, Executive Director of the Marco Island Chamber of Commerce, welcomed guests to celebrate the evening and then passed the microphone to Erik Condee who had served as Chamber President this past year. He said the Chamber tackled a number of issues it faced during the year and he wished the new president well in meeting the challenges of 2019. Eric will continue to serve the board as past president.  He then introduced the 2019 Chamber of Commerce President, Dr. Rick Siegel.

Immediately following dinner, Craig Woodward, past president of the Chamber of Commerce and a Lifetime Achievement Award winner himself, asked other past recipients in attendance to come up to the podium. Among the guests, the past recipients were Tom Wagor, Nancy Carrington and Bill Young.

Craig then described the qualities and traits of this year’s Lifetime Achievement award recipient. As soon as he mentioned some of her adventurous feats, the audience knew the recipient was Myrt Rose.

Myrt once rode into a birthday celebration for her husband (Bill Rose) on an elephant.  Yes, she had also been a wing-walker. She was also licensed to pilot a plane and fly a helicopter. Once while taking her antique plane out for an afternoon excursion, Myrt unintentionally entered closed air space (due to a Presidential visit).  She was quickly escorted down by two fighter pilots who had been scrambled to check out the intruder. Myrt continued her philanthropic giving to Marco Island after Bill passed, much to Marco Island’s benefit.

While members of the 2018 class of Leadership Marco were formally recognized, Dianna called up each participant and Donna Niemczyk handed plaques to each to commemorate their graduation.

The 2019 Board of Directors was officially sworn in by Collier County Commissioner Donna Fiala. After the installation of the board, Dr. Siegel spoke on the benefits of laughter. He played a short video with Tim Conway and Harvey Keitel and the room roared. Dr. Siegel then described the journey he had to get to Marco Island. In order to move here, he’d not only have to sell their home in Ohio, but he’d have to take the medical exam in Florida all over again, 25 years after taking it in Ohio. Dr. Siegel is not afraid of challenges and everyone wishes him a great year ahead.
