Motorcycle Crash Claims Life, Another in Hospital

Tragedy hit Marco Island Monday night when a man and a woman were thrown from a three-wheeled motorcycle while driving on North Collier Boulevard near Holly Court.

Marco Island resident Albert  D. O’Connell, 71, lost control of the southbound motorcycle after careening off a curb, ejecting both him and his passenger, 57-year-old Patricia Reilly, from the bike. O’Connell died on the scene, and Med-Flight arrived on the scene to fly Reilly to the Lee County Trauma Center in Fort Myers to be treated for serious injuries. No other vehicles were involved.

Marco Island authorities received the call about the crash at approximately 9:30 PM Monday night, and Marco Island fire-rescue and police departments, along with Collier County Emergency Medical Services, were dispatched to the scene.

While authorities continue to investigate the crash, they do know that O’Connell was riding the bike as a favor to a friend who asked him to take it out because it had not been ridden in some time.
