As darkening skies and lightning from the east loomed, the Marco Island Academy (MIA) Rays played against the Community School Seahawks in their recent season opener.
MIA Athletics and Activities Director, Ryan Roberts, had organized a special “Senior Night, Friday Night Lights Experience” at Barron Collier High School, complete with food trucks, but unfortunately, Mother Nature derailed those plans.
The Seahawks took an early 27-0 lead. MIA fans exploded with cheers at the end of the first quarter as senior Joshua Ames stunned with a 20-yard run. Shortly after the buzzer rang ending the quarter, the lightning alarm sounded, causing a mandatory evacuation of all players, fans and staff, who fled to their vehicles for shelter. Within minutes, the skies opened with a heavy downpour. Each team waited on their school buses until the game was called…thus, giving a 27-0 victory to the Seahawks.
The MIA Rays hit the road and face the Oasis Sharks of Cape Coral on August 31 at 7 PM. Their next home game is against St. John Neumann at Winterberry Park on September 21 at 7 PM.
