All boaters and boating organizations on Marco Island are invited to participate in the 2017 Marco Island Blessing of the Fleet, sponsored by the Marco Island Yacht Club (MIYC).
The Blessing of the Fleet is a traditional invocation of good fortune for boaters.
The Marco Island Yacht Club Bridge will be in formation as the boats pass in review after Chaplain Richard Blauw has blessed the fleet.
The tradition began many centuries ago in Mediterranean fishing communities, and is now an annual highlight in Marco Island and many seacoast communities across the United States.
The vessels will assemble in the Marco River between Factory Bay and the Jolley Bridge beginning at 10 AM and then parade past the Marco Island Yacht Club at 11 AM. The parade will be led by the Marco Island Fire Department vessel, “J.W. Adams,” and the Marco Island Princess.
Boating organizations are encouraged to participate and have their vessels grouped together in the presentation. Their members may also view the parade from courtyard and veranda of the Yacht Club where they will have a “front row” seat to all the activity.
Participants and spectators are invited to stay for a buffet lunch at the Marco Island Yacht Club and enjoy a “Concert in the Courtyard” featuring the Marco Strummers. A reservation is required by calling 239-394-0199. The buffet lunch is priced at $28, and non-members may pay by credit card.
There is no charge for boats to register and participate in the event. Registration forms can be downloaded from the Marco Island Yacht Club website (www.marcoislandyachtclub.net) or from Roy Hershberger at email@example.com (phone 239-269-3063). Boaters desiring to participate should register as soon as possible. The Blessing of the Fleet will be limited to 30 boats.
