Moe Bishop smiled as both his sail and power boats received a free Vessel Safety Check conducted by United States Power Squadron Certified Vessel safety Examiner Jim Fahrbach. Ted Reiss also of the Marco Island Sail and Power Squadron accompanied Jim during the free safety check.
Bishop received the 2014 US Coast Guard safety stickers which can only be issued by Certified US Coast Guard Auxiliary and United States Power Squadrons VSC examiners. These decals, placed on Bishop’s boats, signal that he is a careful and responsible boater, committed to his personal safety and to the safety of his passengers and fellow boaters.
A Vessel Safety Check is availablefor free to any boater requesting one. Certified Members of the Marco Island Sail and Power Squadron conduct these checks which take approximately 25 minutes. To arrange for one, simply call Tom Ryan at 239-389-6585, or email him at firstname.lastname@example.org.
The Vessel Safety Check does not address the mechanical operation of the boat; it simply looks at whether U.S. Coast Guard safe boating requirements are being observed on board the vessel. Examples of the types of items Included in the Vessel Safety Check for boats under 26’ are: correct numbering on the boat, current registration available, proper type and number of personal flotation devices on board, in-date visualdistress signals, proper fire extinguisher in working condition, sound producing devices, working navigation lights and safety covers on battery terminals.
The Vessel Safety Check requirements change for different sizes and types of boats and watercraft. Additional information on the contents of the Vessel Safety Check is available at www.SafetySeal.net
The members of the Marco Island Sail and Power Squadron are dedicated to making boating safer and more enjoyable by teaching classes on seamanship, navigation, and related subjects. Its members are boaters and those interested in becoming boaters who contribute to the community by providing safe boating through education.
