On December 9th, 2020 at 4:00 pm, the Marco Island Charter Middle School notified the Marco Island Police Department regarding a school threat. Officers immediately responded and began an investigation into the situation. There was no immediate danger to students as the threat was reported after students had been dismissed for the day. Numerous school officials, students, and parents were interviewed. The threats were verbal in nature and took place in a school recreation area when children were playing with a ball. The twelve-year-old male who was alleged to have made the statements denied doing so. The child has been removed from the school by administrators. There is no evidence that the child has immediate access to firearms in his home. Since 2018 the Marco Island Police Department has assigned a School Resource Officer to each of the Island’s schools (elementary, middle, and high school). No further information is available – the investigation is ongoing.
