Each summer, Mackle Park hosts a series of camps, including a MICKYS (Marco Island City Kids Youth Sailing) Program. This summer’s program employed newly-certified U.S. Sailing Instructors – Club members Captain Jim Marr, Alan Brown, and Commodore M.A. Kline, and Marco-Area residents Sue MacMorris and Tom Cooper – as curriculum developers, coaches, and safety coordinators. As you can see from the pictures, the kids – and the instructors, too – had a fun and safe learningexperience. The classes were filled to the max, and some of the students signed up for multiple sessions!
Skills learned included knot tying, boat terminology, points of sail, rigging of the prams and 420s, capsize drills, boating etiquette and right of way, as well as sailing skills and racing coaching. Each attendee’s skill level is recorded in an individual U.S. Sailing-issued “Little Red Book” which each student may use to document their experience at other sailing locations. Students completing our MICKYScourse are also awarded a Certificate of Graduation by Parks and Recreation Director Bryan Milk.
MICKYS instruction is planned to continue this fall with Saturday morning racing clinics. Our goal is to have our “Graduates” participate in Naples-Area one-design-boat regattas, and to host our own MICKYS Regatta in conjunction with the MIYC Fall Regatta, whose proceeds support the MICKYS Sailing Program. Boats for this program were donated by the Marco Island Yacht Club, and financial support has been given through various community organizations and businesses.
