In the school’s first year competing, eight members of Marco Island Academy’s Thespian Society Troupe traveled to the all-day District 6 Thespians Festival competition on Saturday, December 8 at Fort Myers High School. After a day of competing in monologues, musical solos and duets, and ensemble acting scene, the troupe received a total of one Good, eight Excellent, and five Superior ratings. District participants who receive Superiors in the main events are eligible to compete at the Florida State Thespian Festival in Tampa in March 2019, and MIA will be sending its three qualifying students and performance pieces.
MIA’s Thespian Society Troupe, an international theatre honor society, inducted its first 12 members last April. Under the leadership of Christopher Dayett, MIA’s Performing Arts Director, Troupe 8628 has become the face of the theatre program and an important part of the Performing Arts Department. “The accomplishments at Districts are a milestone for our troupe and program. In our first time competing, we are excited to send selected troupe members to States,” Dayett says. “We put our little school on the map this December!” The majority of the rehearsals took place the week of Districts and the hard work paid-off, as all of MIA’s competitors received honors for their performance pieces. The Superior-rated performance pieces of Emily Boxma (Monologue, Musical Duet, Ensemble Acting Scene), Harvey Millar (Musical Duet, Ensemble Acting Scene), and Sean White (Ensemble Acting Scene) qualify for the state competition.
Marco Island Academy’s Performing Arts program strives to provide students a positive, safe, and fun outlet as they discover and explore the creative world of the performing arts and how these disciplines can be applied to everyday life. Current class offerings include Theatre, Theatre Design/Marketing, Musical Theatre, Public Speaking, Chorus, and Film. The Performing Arts Department will next present Disney’s “Aladdin Jr.” in an outdoor venue on the school campus in late March.
