Ten hours, a connecting flight and a few bus rides later, thirteen members of the Marco Island Academy (MIA) family landed in Venice, Italy. Two teachers accompanied by two parents and nine students traveled their way throughout the landscapes of Italy visiting Venice, Florence, Rome, Pompeii, Positano, and the Amalfi Coast.
Spanish teacher Fernando Higuera and social studies teacher Lori Galiana inspire many students with their desire to learn, travel, and experience many different cultures. As a team, the two partnered with Passports, an educational travel group, to construct a trip that the students and their families would never forget. Lori Galiana states, “As hard as it is to organize, plan and supervise these trips, it is so rewarding to give a student the exposure to other cultures at an early age.” Each member of the travel group sends their gratitude to WOW Jet Ski tours and Clausen Properties for their donations to make this overseas trip possible.
First stop, Venice! The students were in awe of the unfamiliar architecture that surrounded them, amazed by the sincere beauty, and were not at all intimidated by the language barrier. Galiana even expressed that when they first saw Venice’s skyline, the kid’s faces were filled with “true bewilderment and excitement.” She goes on to state, “I wish I had that picture, but it is seared into my memory. I almost cried then.”
The group saw historic landmarks such as the Roman Colosseum, Vatican City, the ruins of Pompeii, and many more. And of course, the fresh pizza was eaten daily, along with the mouthwatering gelato! From bus stop to water bus, each location gave every member a new experience, opportunity, and memory to hold with them forever.
The trip closed with a quick pit stop in Positano and the breathtaking Amalfi Coast. Student Hunter Delgado confessed, “You would think that a group of kids that live on an island wouldn’t find another beach that interesting but the entire bus ride everyone had their faces pressed up to glass looking at the view.” And with that, the group said arrivederci to Italy, and packed their bags to head back to the States.
As a student who traveled on this trip, I can say without the shred of a doubt that I will never forget the memories made in Italy with my peers and teachers. From laughing at each other’s attempt of the Italian language to seeing where history was made, I could not have asked for a better way to experience Italy. I have always wanted to immerse myself in other cultures and truly experience how different parts of the world live and thanks to this trip I have a newfound appreciation for so many aspects of my life and the beautiful world I live in.
