Marco Island Center for the Arts’ Lauritzen & Rush Galleries was the perfect venue for the recent Marco Island Academy Spring Festival of the Performing Arts. The Art Center was a partner with MIA for this yearly celebration of honoring excellence in film, musical theatre, production design and marketing, and intro/advanced theatre at the academy.
The students created films, executed monologues, enacted scenes and crooned songs from popular plays and musicals. Set design, staging and makeup were handled by the academy’s production design and marketing students.
The Musical Theatre Class began the evening with “When I Grow Up” from Matilda the Musical. Interspersed between vivid renditions of favorite songs from Camelot and Oklahoma was a monologue from Hamlet, a scene from “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” and an original film titled “Breadism 2: Unleash the Yeast.”
The second act included musical improv from members of the MIA Performing Arts classes and a staged reading from “Family Business.” The delightful evening ended with the Musical Theatre Class singing “For Good” from Wicked.
Marco Island Academy believes that performing arts benefit all students because the process of creating and critiquing engages students in higher order thinking skills. Their students discover ways to express themselves through film, music and theater.
